In this extraordinary account of the complicity of multinational corporations in repression and racial conflict in South Africa, Anthony Sampson traces the tragic relationship between capitalism and apartheid, beginning in the diamond and gold mines of a century ago and continuing to present-day South Africa, at the brink of civil war. How the world's biggest businesses reacted to the growing pressure from abroad and to the accelerating breakdown of South African society is the fascinating story in which Sampson is both participant and observer. Sampson, whose own involvement with South Africa dates from the 1950s when he edited the black South African magazine DRUM - and came to know future black leaders including Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo - leads the reader from the boardrooms of New York to riot-torn Johannesburg, relating the South African tragedy in terms of vivid individuals. He shows that the original mine owners were largely unaware of the political significance of the urbanized black communities they had helped to create, and he explains how the Afrikaner farmers reacted to the capitalist within the context of their own Calvinistic nationalism, eventually imposing the harsh doctrine of apartheid.
