Good 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Paperback Second Printing An Anglo-Irish British Army soldier and statesman, widely considered one of the leading military and political figures of the first half of the nineteenth century. Commissioned an ensign in the British Army, Arthur Wellesley rose to prominence in the Napoleonic Wars, eventually reaching the rank of field marshal. The Duke of Wellington has rather a mixed reputation in his home country of Ireland, where he is generally seen as being British instead of being Irish. He was a member of the Ascendancy, the Anglo-Irish, and largely Protestant, aristocracy of Ireland which was generally hated by the Irish Catholic majority.
