new edition. ~ Cloth, VG. xlviii+915pp, occasional neat underlining in coloured pencil, hinges a little tender, buckram rubbed at the head & tail of the spine, a nice copy. ~ Complete & unabridged edition, with copious footnotes by Robertson, of Buckle's opus. Buckle [ 1821 - 1862 ] had intended to wtite a all encompasssing History of Civilization, but got no further, despite 17 years of effort, than the publication of an Introduction [ this work ] in which he set down his method of inquiry & the general principles by which Human history is governed.

Although this work was only completed as far as part of the introduction due to the scope of what Buckle intended his philosophical approcah to the subject was groundbreaking when it was published in 1857. These Miscellaneous papers represent fragments of writings on many historical subjects each displaying Buckle's innovative methods in historical research.
